A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck near the island of Crete.

Depth was shallow, about 10 km.  Maximum Mercalli Intensity was about VII to VIII.

This corresponds to significant ground accelerations of as much as 30% g or more.

In view of the many historic and masonry structures, the possibility of signficant damage and injuries cannot be excluded at this time.

A screenshot of the OH forecast for M>6.5 and the island of Crete is at left.

Red teardrop is the earthquake location.
