We are now moving into the thick of hurricane/typhoon/tropical cyclone season.  The image here is a NASA MODIS satellite photo of super typhoon Utor that struck the Philippines today, monday August 12, 2013.

While it had been a Category 4 storm, with peak winds of 130 knots (150 mph or 240 km/hr), it weakened as it passed over the Philippine islands.

At this writing, 1 person is known dead, 23 were missing, and hundreds were evacuated.

Utor has now weakened to a Category 2 storm, and is currently passing over the south China sea.

Utor was the strongest storm to hit the Philippines so far this year.
